June 2026 Newsletter

Shipmates & Hubbard family and friends,

Thanks to shipmate Brad Howe and his wife Anne and his wardroom shipmates for a very successful Boston reunion. Boston and New England in general are expensive places to hold reunions and we did not turn a profit. Prices were kept low to encourage attendance but the numbers attending were about the same as the previous year. We are hoping for a big turnout for the Branson reunion as some of the people who never fly anywhere may find it to be within driving distance and the music venue may be more appealing to some than tours of ships and historical places.

Since the reunion, donations have been received from Ted McArthur (SN, 59-61) and John Sarff (GMG2, 62-66). Our latest project needing funds is updating our website, which is presently bits and pieces stitched together over time. It has become increasingly difficult to enter and correct information.

Hubbard veteran Jim Prock (LTjg 1957-60) of Palm Desert California has written another novel, this one featuring action hero Austin Cook. The blurb he sent me: “A masterful deception has left the President in a vulnerable position. Should he take immediate action and plunge the nation into chaos, or wait for more information and risk breaching his sacred Oath of Office? He calls on Austin Cook once again, the only person outside government whose opinion he fully trusts — his go-to guy when the chips are down.” The title is Nuclear Manifesto. It is available on Amazon. He has donated a copy to the reunion for the Silent Auction. Speaking of which, if you are attending the reunion be sure to bring an item or two for the Silent Auction.

Last issue shipmate Shane Hayes (SK3 1968-9) did a history of 1969. Coming up is a history of 1968. It will be in the next issue. The list of all those aboard in 1968 is in this issue. Let me know if you think there is an error. By the way we are always looking for first person accounts of Hubbard stuff. Keep it printable for what is (or should be) a family newspaper.

Also, I have just discovered that STG2 Gary Paul Burbank was left off the crew list for 1969. Al Eisenbraun recently located his gravesite and he appears on the list below. The list is a long one. One of our original members and active participant over many years RD2 Charles A. Shook is listed. He was aboard 1954-57 and attended all reunions from the first in 1989 through Milwaukee in 2021. He was the host at the first one I attended, in Asheville N.C. in 1995, and hosted or co-hosted a number of others, assisted by his daughter Jenifer. Vern Fairchild was a former association board member who helped track down and add shipmates to our roster. Capt. Ed Cole was a former XO. Also noted is Chief Ed Polasek, age 101. S 1/c Ted Ritter was the last of our plankowners on the roster, those who manned the ship from day one.

Homeport Long Beach
as told by Shane Hayes, SK3 1968-9

Every swabby who ever stepped aboard our ship has some memory of Long Beach. Some of the early years the USS Harry E. Hubbard DD-748 called San Diego home but Long Beach was often a destination even if not the home port. From the Flot Club on the mole to the front gate or shipyard; strolling towards your favorite watering hole; or perhaps wandering through the Pike with its roller coaster and tattoo parlors. Something about hitting the beach in this town has stuck in your gray matter. My memories include liberty with my Hubbard buddies and a transfer to an even older destroyer, the USS Mullany DD-528 for my new billet after USS Harry E. Hubbard was decommissioned.

Former Long Beach Naval Station and Naval Shipyard

As newlyweds my wife and I were evicted from our first Long Beach apartment, the one with the Murphy bed, along with sailors from the USS Brinkley Bass DD-887 and USS Turner Joy DD-951, by a new apartment manager who disliked naval personnel. The Navy subsequently blackballed those apartments. Moving to a much better apartment, I agreed to become the apartment manager for drastically reduced rent. Imagine my surprise to learn of Hell’s Angels members two doors away. Fortunately a patriotic bunch, they kept an eye on our neighborhood and loved ones whenever we deployed for short runs at sea.

Shipmates have many stories to tell, I am sure. About locker clubs. About the pedestrian bridge that was sometimes underwater so you had to take off your shoes to walk across. About California girls who appeared so grown-up but hung around on the sidewalk because they were too young to get into bars. San Quentin quail.

But, let us turn to a short history of the Navy in Long Beach, both the Naval Station and the Naval Shipyard. Long ago Terminal Island was 800 acres of mudflats. In 1919 the Navy was divided into Atlantic and Pacific fleets and battleships were assigned to the Pacific Fleet. In 1928 Long Beach was homeport for the Navy’s first two real aircraft carriers, USS Lexington CV-2 and USS Saratoga CV-3. (USS Langley CV-1 was a cargo ship planked over with a wooden deck.)

In 1933 a massive 6.4 earthquake struck Long Beach leaving 140,000 without shelter and causing 120 fatalities. Within fifteen minutes after the quake the admiral in charge deployed the Navy to help deal with the aftermath of destruction, injuries and breakdown of order. More than 4,500 sailors and marines came ashore to provide rescue units and patrols to assist local authorities. Navy doctors and corpsmen supplied critical help. At the time there were over fifty ships and thirty thousand sailors stationed in Long Beach.

In 1940 the city of Long Beach ceded 108 acres of land on Terminal Island to the Navy for the grand sum of $1, retaining mineral rights to the recently discovered oilfield beneath the site. Long Beach Naval Shipyard was established with a land acquisition for a two-mile long harbor breakwater and the 1.9 mile mole. The main element of the shipyard, the dry dock facility, was begun in 1941 but not completed until 1945. In September 1942 Roosevelt Base Terminal Island and shipyard was founded as a ship repair facility. Construction had begun in 1939. By 1945 the shipyard’s wartime employment level reached 16,091. The base also made a major conversion to the famous hospital ship USS Hope AH-7 and built five floating dry docks that were used at various locations in the western Pacific to repair damaged ships. Additional duties included becoming an important convoy assembly point and loading cargo ships. The Long Beach facilities grew to include warehouses, a Marine barracks, cranes, repair shops, fuel storage, an ammunition depot, a Navy hospital, a prison, a degaussing range, a radio station, an airfield and a number of schools.

Ship repair was the largest undertaking at the base during the war. From February 1943 to August 1945 the base docked 406 ships, performed 303 major repairs and overhauls, including work on nine battleships, 14 heavy and light cruisers, 46 destroyers, 31 destroyer escorts and 30 oilers.

Long Beach CA Naval Station — Circa 1960

Roosevelt Base Terminal Island was renamed Naval Station Long Beach in 1946 and established as a homeport for Pacific Fleet ships. It provided port facilities, fleet support personnel and recreational amenities. Through the war years oil was pumped from under the site. Over time the surface of the land sunk as much as ten feet in some areas. To remedy this water was injected to replace the oil, at a cost of $5.5 million (or $71 million in today’s dollars). In 1950 the shipyard and naval station were placed in inactive status but very soon the Korean War broke out. In 1951 Long Beach Naval Shipyard was reactivated and in 1952 ships of a growing Navy fleet were again home ported at Naval Station Long Beach, including USS Harry E. Hubbard DD748 and other ships of DesRon 13. This picture is from 1960. Hubbard is between USS Turner Joy DD951 and USS Ernest G. Small DD838. The large ship is USS Haleakala AE-25, an ammunition ship.

One of the most prominent residents of the shipyard was the world’s largest self-propelled floating crane, YD-171, also known as “Herman the German.” It was built in 1941 by the Germans and tended U-boats during WWII. It was brought to the U.S. as war reparations. When the shipyard closed it went to Panama, where it was renamed Titan and is still in use by the canal maintenance personnel. Its original anchor, weighing 5512 pounds has a Nazi swastika imprinted in it.

Between 1965 and 1970 Long Beach was home port to 140 ships and 40,000 personnel. Following the end of the Vietnam War the ships declined until by 1991 there were 17,000 sailors with 38 ships. These included USS Missouri BB-63 and USS New Jersey BB-62.

There were some noteworthy visitors to the Long Beach Navy facility. Bob Hope did one of his legendary shows there in 1951. 1967 saw the filming of the Elvis Presley movie Easy Come, Easy Go.

If battleships could blush, the USS Missouri would be bright red. The Missouri hosted the signing of the Japanese surrender in 1945. But, the Mighty Mo & Pier D in the Naval Shipyard at Long Beach had never seen the likes of Cher. She brought the house down in 1989 by prancing around the deck wearing a fishnet G-string while shooting her video & singing her hit, “If I could turn back time.” The crew went wild, while the Navy regretted granting permission, considering how risqué the performance was.

Both the Long Beach Naval Station and the Naval Shipyard were ordered closed under the 1990 legislation Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act (BRAC). The base closure began in 1991 with the Navy Base, Naval housing and the Naval Hospital. Cleaning up the port facility cost $4 million. There were various oils, acids, solvents, paints and other chemicals, plus some low-level radiation. The shipyard closure was completed in 1997.

On the site of the old Navy base a Port of Long Beach was created. Initially it was operated by China Ocean Shipping Co. In 1997 they were replaced by the South Korean logistics and container transport business Hanjin Shipping Company. Part of the harbor is used by the U.S. Department of Transportation for its U.S. Maritime Administration’s Ready Reserve Force, the SS Cape Isabel AKR-5062 and SS Cape Inscription AKR-5076.
